Title - Hook-Up Kevin

Kevin games and writes in bulk, be it about video games, television shows, film and fiction. He spends more time glued to a computer than is healthy and you can find more of his ramblings on his own blog. He’s also recently found the joys of streaming and pressuring Kim into playing horror games.

The 1001-Up.com team first met this amazing Writer back in September 2013 when he posted a comment on our review of Full Throttle. As soon as he realised he shared a love of point-and-click adventures with Kim, we were unable to get rid of him! but seriously, over the past few months he’s become a great friend of the team; and he’s also done us the honour of contributing a couple of excellent reviews in the past. Here are his answers to our questions…

Kevin Kutlesa B&W

Describe yourself in five words.

“Brutally honest and mildly evil.”

What do you do in ‘real life’?

“I’m a software developer, though if I could write for a living I’d do so… or work in the video games industry.”

What do you do in your spare time?

“Play, write, watch TV series and Films, and hang out with my friends, both offline and online.”

Where did you grow up and what were you like as a kid?

“I spent my first six years in Venezuela, then spent three years in Switzerland and then came back to Venezuela… And I think I was a pain in the ass, pretty much how I am now.”

How did you get into gaming?

“I played with my great aunt’s Intellivision when I was very little, but really got into gaming while living in Switzerland when my dad bought us the NES.”

What’s your favourite video game and why?

“I don’t really have a definite favourite, but more of a list of games I absolutely adore. But if I have to mention ONE, I’d say The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, because of, well, everything. I loved the plot, the characters, the world, the scale and the challenge it posed when I first played it.”

How did you get into blogging?

I spent a couple of years writing stuff on Facebook Notes, mostly New Year messages and such, but then after reading a friend’s blog and wanting to write more short stories and such, I decided to take the plunge and start blogging. I started with Blogger but my friends recommended I switch to WordPress and that’s how I landed here.”

Do you think it has changed you in any way?

“Oh yeah, I’ve met a lot of fun people, I’ve learned to deal with criticism. It’s different than dealing with office criticism, as people on the internet are far more brutal in letting you know how you’re messing up. I’ve gone out of my comfort zone and done some really cool things.”

Which of your articles are you most proud of?

“I think the one post I’m most proud of is my first Lillian Carpenter story, Of Two Minds, because it was my first attempt at first person narrative with two points of view, and it came off really well, and people really liked it. On ‘articles’ it’d be The Seduction of Horror.”

What has been your favourite moment in your blogging career so far?

“Getting together and playing Torchlight II and Borderlands 2 with the 1001-Up.com crew and talking hours on end with V about film, TV, articles and such.”

What are you most looking forward to over the coming year?

“Getting some of my plans off the ground and see them fulfilled, and of course going over to the UK and meet up with Kim, Phil, Craig, Ben and possibly V.”

Describe each member of the 1001-Up.com team… and you don’t have to be nice. Really.

Kim – Awesome and bossy… so bossily awesome.
Phil – The straight man in the comedy trio… and he looks like Nick Frost.
CraigAndy Parsons impersonator and really cool dude.

Thanks to Kevin for answering our questions and for agreeing to join the team – it’s a pleasure to have him with us! It wouldn’t be fair if the rest of the crew didn’t squirm under the spotlight so they’re up next, starting with Craig tomorrow.
